DAVID

“Slaying Your Inner Giants”
Pastor Doug Heisel – June 9, 2024

1 Samuel 16

1 Samuel 16:1 – Now the LORD said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”

1 Samuel 16:6-7 – When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:10-12 – In the same way, all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” So Jesse sent for him… And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.”

Giant lies that will hold you back and seek to defeat you:

  • You will never have ENOUGH or be ENOUGH.

  • You’re on your own, so you’ll have to figure out the PLAN by yourself.

  • What matters the most, is that you are HAPPY.

Declarations of Victory:

  1. FEAR has no hold on me, for God is WITH me, and He gives me His PEACE.

    1 Samuel 16:14-16, 18
    — Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and the Lord sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear. Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you. Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again…” One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.”

  2. My SECURITY is anchored in faithfully HONORING God. That is what matters most.

    Psalm 1:1-3
    — Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

1 Samuel 16:19-22 — Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep…” David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”

Psalm 19:14 – May these words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

  3. I COURAGEOUSLY pursue God’s will, trusting His plans and TIMING.

    Acts 13:22
    – After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.

Acts 13:36 – Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors…
