GRACE WINS

“Grace Comes After You”
Pastor Doug Heisel – March 27, 2022

Romans 5:20 — But sin did not, and does not, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it is sin versus grace, grace wins hands down.

John 4:1-10 — Now (Jesus) had to go through Samaria. So He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. (vs. 4-6)

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) (vs. 7-8)

The Samaritan woman said to Him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) (vs. 9)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” (vs. 10)

Insights on Grace, From An Ancient Well

  1. Grace is not passive. Jesus is relentlessly and personally pursuing YOU!

John 4:4 — Now Jesus had to go through Samaria...

John 1:14 — The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  2. Living outside of God’s grace can actually damage your SELF-WORTH and rob you of your God-given PURPOSE.

John 4:6b-7a — It was about noon… a Samaritan woman came to draw water John 4:17-18 — Jesus told her, “You're right when you say that you don't have a husband. You've had five husbands, and the man you have now isn't your husband...”

  3. Truth allies with grace to REDEEM you. It too speaks hope and life not shame or condemnation.

John 4:10 — Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.”

John 1:16-17 — From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  4. Only Jesus can SATISFY your deepest relational, emotional and spiritual needs.

John 4:13-14 — “Everyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again. But those who drink the water that I will give them will never become thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give them will become in them a spring that gushes up to eternal life.”

John 4:25-26 — The woman said to Him, “I know that the Messiah is coming. When He comes, He will tell us everything.” ... Jesus told her, “I am He, and I am speaking to you now.”

  5. Jesus wants to use YOU to share the good news of His GRACE with others.

John 4:28-29 — Then the woman left her water jar and went back into the city. She told the people, “Come with me, and meet a man who told me everything I've ever done. Could He be the Messiah?”

John 4:39 — Many Samaritans in that city believed in Jesus because of the woman who said, “He told me everything I've ever done.”

John 4:35 — Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
